11. What about venting in stucco walls?
Venting in stucco walls is vital if it is a dead air space. A dead air space is one in which the air cannot circulate in and out. Like a balcony wall with stucco on two sides of it…or a column with stucco on 4 sides of it. If the air cannot circulate then moisture will usually become a problem and rot will often occur. Vents are an absolute necessity where the finish is waterproof or painted. It should have a vent across the top of the wall at an absolute minimum and preferably across the bottom and the top in the case of a waterproof stucco finish. These vents can be retrofitted along with a flashing improvement on stucco balcony walls….or with new membranes on the deck.
